Change in plans?
4:00 am: I check the weather report. It doesn’t look good. What is described as a “Kona low” is impacting all of Hawaii. Kauai continues with large amounts of rain and on a flood watch. Kalalau Trail is still closed due to rain and flooding. More snow on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa bringing snowboarders, skiers and the curious.
I am considering my options. Awake too early but can’t really stop wondering if going is the right thing to do. Covid is spiking with a new variant, my whole goal was to see family however want to keep them safe. I need to hike this trail, I have been waiting this since 2018 and now I am watching my hopes get washed away.
I am having problems sleeping; Up too early and will repack my backpack. tent, stove, inflatable mattress, food, water filtration system, socks and warm clothes. Still need to setup the satellite phone. Backpack weight is less than twenty pounds, still need 3 liter bladder full. I am considering taking both Chlorine Dioxide tablets and UV water purifier. Perhaps boiling water it is the safest surest choice. I however like to have options. Researched IsoProp fuel canisters. Pretty readily available at any hardware store on the Island. Plan is to pick up the Isoprop fuel as soon as I get off the plane in Kauai.
This repacking has me feeling rejuvenated and excited for my new adventure. One more shift at work today and then tonight I pack for the last time. Everything I forget will have to be purchase there. Next stop Oahu.
